Team Canada was eliminated from the men's hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, on Wednesday after losing to Russia 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and Alexei Kovalev, of the Montreal Canadiens, scored for Russia while Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks posted the shutout. Ottawa Senators defenceman Anton Volchenkov is a member of the Russian squad.
Russia will now face Team Finland at 3 p.m. on Thursday in one of the semifinals. All remaining games will take place at Palasport Olympico.
Finland remained unbeaten at the Olympics after holding on for a 4-3 victory over the United States. Brian Gionta cut the Finns lead to 4-3 with a little more than four minutes remaining but that's as close as the American would get. Olli Jokinen scored two goals for the Finns.
The other semifinal will feature Team Sweden and the Czech Republic starting at 10:30 a.m.
Daniel Alfredsson continues to shine for Team Sweden. The Ottawa Senators captain handed out three assists in a 6-2 victory over Switzerland on Wednesday. Holding a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, the Swedes pulled away in the second period after outscoring the Swiss 3-0.
The loss ended a magical run for Switzerland at the Olympics. Wins over the past two gold-medal winners -- Canada and Czech Republic -- allowed the Swiss to finish second in Pool A.
The Czech Republic struggled in preliminary action after losing Senators goaltender Dominik Hasek in its first game against Germany to an strained adductor muscle. On Wednesday, however, the team rallied in front of goaltender Tomas Vokoun of the Nashville Predators to knock off the previously unbeaten Team Slovakia 3-1. Senators defenceman Andrej Meszaros and Zdeno Chara represented Slovakia.
On Saturday, the bronze-medal game will be held at 2:30 p.m. The gold-medal game begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
