Senators Assistant GM Randy Lee offered his thoughts on the signing of prospect Mikael Wikstrand to an entry-level contract on Thursday.
Here's what he had to say...
We're pretty happy about this signing, Mikael Wikstrand is a really solid player. I had a chance to go over and see him this year with Rick Wamsley when he was playing in Mora, he's a very strong, two-way defenceman, he has a lot of offensive upside and he's a guy that we challenged to play at a higher level. This season he changed and went to Frölunda in a higher division which was good for us. He got to play against better players and really showcased himself.
On his Development Camp attendance this summer:
We had a meeting with Mikael and he's very excited to come to this year's camp. He was at our camp two years ago, last year he had an injury so he couldn't attend, but he wants to come, see where he's at and give our staff a good chance to see him in comparison to other players at his level and see where he goes from there.
On where he can play next season:
Under the league rules, Mikael can come to North America next year but he can only play on the big club — he has to make the Ottawa Senators. If he doesn't make the Senators he can't go to Binghamton so most likely he would play another year in Frölunda. He can play at both levels (NHL or AHL) in two years.
