Pyatt: "I wanted to be back in Ottawa"

by Craig Medaglia @craigmedaglia / Ottawa Senators

After agreeing to a two-year contract extension in Monday afternoon, we caught up with Sens winger Tom Pyatt to talk about wanting to return, his relationship with the coach and more...

On signing a two-year extension today:

It's a great feeling to be back for another two years. That's what I wanted. They wanted me back and I wanted to come back. I definitely wasn't even close to thinking about sniffing around in free agency. I wanted to be back in Ottawa so it's nice to get another two years here.

On wanting to build off of the team's success last year:

This is a team that I want to be a part of. We had some really good success this season and became a hard team to play against. I'm really happy to be a part of the team for the next two years and I think I fit in with the team pretty well.

On how the deal was struck so quickly:

Both sides weren't really in a rush but it's a busy month for GMs and there's a lot going on with the expansion draft so I fully expected to get something done this week. I woke up this morning to my agent texting me and saying 'we should get this done today' so I was thrilled to be able to get a contract done so quickly.

On if this extension validates all his hard work over the past few years:

It was a lot of hard work and I was so happy to come back from Europe. I was all right with going over there and if I never played in the NHL again...I was ok with that but deep down inside I always wanted to make a return to the NHL. To have a season like we did and to be a part of that and the team's success was really nice. Knowing I'll be back for a couple more seasons is a really good feeling.

On his relationship with head coach Guy Boucher:

I think every coach sees the game in their own way and maybe every coach has certain players in mind that fit that vision. Obviously, I'd had experience with him in the past and this was his first year back too so maybe he wanted a player that he was familiar with. It helped me out as well since I knew what to expect from him. When guys come back from Europe, it's a tough adjustment so it helped me a lot to come to a team that had some form of familiarity. They gave me a big opportunity here and it worked out pretty well.

On the decision to sign for two more years:

The team wanted that as well and obviously that's what I wanted so it was nothing too complicated for everyone. I really didn't want to go looking around anywhere else. I think I'm a really good fit in Ottawa and this is where I want to be.
