The Buffalo Sabres spoiled the efforts of one of their former players Friday night when they defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 at Scotiabank Place.
Denis Hamel, who skated with the Sabres for three seasons, scored a natural hat trick for Ottawa in defeat. The 29-year-old winger scored all three of his goals in the second period after Buffalo built a 2-0 lead. They came at even strength 6:42 into the period; on the power play at the 9:14 mark; and short-handed 50 seconds later. All three beat Sabres goaltender Martin Biron to the top right corner of the goal. Hamel now has four goals and one assist in two pre-season games played.
Ray Emery started the game in goal for Ottawa and turned away 22 of 25 shots over two periods. Kelly Guard took over in the third period and stopped 12 of 13 shots he faced. Russian rookie Alexei Kaigorodov picked up his first point of the pre-season, an assist on Hamel's second goal.
Buffalo's Tomas Vanek also recorded a three-goal game for Buffalo while Chris Drury had its other tally.
Hamel was named the game's first star, Vanek was second and Rockland, Ont., native Derek Roy was third. The Senators won't have time to rest. They're back in action tomorrow night in Philadelphia against the Flyers, then head to Halifax, N.S., on Sunday to meet the Toronto Maple Leafs and then Truro, N.S. on Monday to take on the Montreal Canadiens.
