by Staff Writer / Ottawa Senators

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has signed defenceman Joe Corvo to a one-year contract.

Corvo, 36, appeared in 40 of 48 possible contests with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012-13. He recorded 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) and 14 penalty minutes over that span. He is returning to Ottawa after previously playing 127 games for the Senators from 2006 to 2008 and currently ranks tied for 17th among all-time franchise defencemen in scoring with 64 points (14 goals, 50 assists).

The 6-1, 210-pound, native of Oak Park, Ill., was originally signed as a free agent by the Senators on July 1, 2006, after beginning his National Hockey League career with Los Angeles in 2002 and spending his first three NHL seasons with the Kings. He has also played for the Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals.

In 689 career regular-season NHL games with Boston, Carolina, Los Angeles, Ottawa and Washington, Corvo has registered 300 points (89 goals, 211 assists) in addition to recording 231 penalty minutes. He has tallied 18 points (five goals, 13 assists) and 14 penalty minutes over 50 post-season games and skated in each of the Senators’ 20 playoff contests in 2007 as the team made its first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final.

Corvo was Los Angeles’ first fourth-round pick (83rd overall) in the 1997 NHL Draft.
