News Release: Ottawa Senators name Pierre Groulx goaltending coach

by Staff Writer / Ottawa Senators

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion announced today the hiring of Pierre Groulx as goaltending coach.

Groulx, 40, joins Ottawa’s coaching staff composed of head coach Guy Boucher, associate coach Marc Crawford and assistant coach Rob Cookson.

An Ottawa native, Groulx spent the 2015-16 season as goaltending coach with the Florida Panthers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Portland Pirates. He has worked previously with three National Hockey League organizations, including the Senators, where he began his career as the team’s video coach in 2000.

“We continue to feel strongly about adding people with significant NHL experience to our staff and Pierre meets that want in an unconditional manner,” said Boucher. “Not only is he someone with whom I enjoyed terrific success while in Hamilton, his familiarity and previous work experience with Craig Anderson is something that I’m certain will be of the utmost benefit to the organization.”

After five seasons with the Senators, Groulx spent the next four campaigns with the Panthers after being hired by Florida in 2005. It was with the Panthers where he was instrumental in Anderson’s development from a back-up goaltender to number one status while also working with prospect goaltenders in Florida's system. After departing the Panthers following the 2008-09 season, Groulx was hired by Montreal in July, 2009, and spent four seasons with the club as goaltending coach where he played an integral role in helping the Canadiens reach the 2010 Eastern Conference Final on the strength of exceptional netminding from Jaroslav Halak.

Groulx has experience working internationally in having been a member of Team Canada’s coaching staff at the 2005 World Hockey Championship in Austria and also spent one season with EHC Munich Red Bull of the Deutsche (Germany) Eishockey Liga (DEL) in 2013-14. He spent the 2014-15 season with Florida’s AHL affiliate in San Antonio before its move to Portland.
