Matt Puempel had a two point performance with a goal and an assist during Saturday's Rookie Tournament opener. Here's what he had to say after the game...
On getting back into action:
I was excited this morning coming to the rink and looking forward to getting back into a real game situation. I thought our first 40 minutes was a lot better than our last 20 but it's just something to work on and build on. Hopefully we can improve on that last 20 minutes, we left our goalie out to dry there. Just have a complete 60 minutes tomorrow.
On his game:
I felt good out there, obviously there's some certain things that take timing to come back but you know that going into the game. That's not an excuse, that's what every player is going through. It's definitely something where you look forward to getting back on the ice as much as you can to get those little things you use in games. I had fun out there and it was good to get back into the game.
On his goal:
I got a fortunate bounce over the D-man's stick. I knew their one d-man was closing in on me because I was the only guy there and I had to get it off as quick as I could. Fortunately enough it beat him far side which is where I was shooting.
On how close he feels to being an NHLer:
Last year I felt great in the American League and learned a lot and developed a lot. I want to push for a spot, definitely. I know management and coaches have the last say on my development and where I'm at with that and what they think is best for my future. I just want to work hard every day and improve as much as I can and push for a spot.
