Draft Profile: Jacob De La Rose

by Chris Lund / Ottawa Senators

Inside the Senate will be taking a look at 40 prospects ahead of the Entry Draft on June 30. Up next is Jacob De La Rose...

The old adage says, “better safe than sorry” and if you’re looking for safe in 2013, Jacob De La Rose is your man.

De La Rose isn’t a big point producer, as evidenced by his 12 points in 38 games for Leksand in the Allsvenskan this past season. At the World Juniors, De La Rose was held off of the scoresheet altogether in six games, though he did record four points in 15 games for the Swedish U20 team in 2012-13. To his credit, however, he was a key cog of a Leksand team that won SEL promotion and a Swedish junior team that captured a silver medal.

What you get from De La rose is a high effort level and a well-rounded defensive game. He is hard on the forecheck and makes things difficult on opposing defencemen, but also has a good sense of where to be defensively and is willing to go to the dirty areas of the ice to win puck battles. He has no problem throwing his weight around and will only get stronger at 6-foot-2, 183 pounds.

If it weren’t for his offensive game, De La Rose would be a guaranteed first round pick. His offensive skillset isn’t particularly advanced, though he did not receive many dedicated offensive minutes and, as such, it’s hard to know where he’ll ultimately be as an offensive player when his development has reached its conclusion.

With De La Rose, you’re ensured a quality two-way forward, it’s simply a matter of the progress he makes offensively and where that slots him in your lineup. The issue isn’t whether or not he becomes an NHLer, it’s if he’s in your top six or a third line checker. His game translates to the North American professional circuit effectively, it’s simply a matter of what capacity the transition occurs.

Expect De La Rose to be taken in either the late first or early second round.
