Coach MacLean post-game - 12.28.2013

by Chris Lund / Ottawa Senators

The Sens bounced back from a tough Friday night in Boston on Saturday with a 4-3 win over the same Bruins that dealt them a 5-0 loss the night before. Sens head coach Paul MacLean offered his thoughts after the win.

Here's what he had to say...

On the response after Friday:

Yeah I thought it was a real good response to last night's game, we came in and I thought we had a good start and played a consistentgame even though it went back and forth. As it turned out, we found a way to win the game, which is something that a week ago, if you said we were going to play Pittsburgh, Boston and Boston in Boston, you might not have given us a chance to win two out of three out of that sequence. A good job by the guys tonight to get a win.

On the game ending PK:

I thought it was a good job with the goalie out, I thought Pageau and Condra, Ceci and I believe it was Jared Cowen who was out at the time did a really good job of staying in the middle and not chasing and finding shooting lanes. A lot of courage to block some shots and that's what it takes to win in this league sometimes is to be a little bit desperate and a little bit determined.

On trying to win more than one in a row:

We've had 11 of those I think so far this year so we have to come here tomorrow and work at it again. There's still things we can do better in our game and do more consistently in our game and we have to make sure we're here to do because we have another difficult game coming up on Monday.

On Spezza and Phillips:

Jason is day-to-day with a lower body injury but it's not related to his surgery from last year on his back and it's not related to his injury earlier in the year in LA. It's just a lower body injury and he's day-to-day. Chris Phillips, I believe, is the same thing. He took a puck in the foot the other night and we'll see what happens.

On the importance of today's game:

I think any time you can — we can always say we've won in a row 11 times but lots of other times we've only lost one in a row too — lately, anyways. So that's a good sign is to rebound from games and if we can just find a way to get some traction I think it's, again, another opportunity for us to gain some traction going into Monday night's game and we — I think it's important for us after a win to not get maybe as high as we've gotten earlier in the year and just be a little more laid back and normal about it and maybe try to get used to doing it would be a nice thing.

On the urgency being raised with injuries:

Well, usually — maybe not urgency but opportunity. Other guys get to play in situations that maybe they wouldn't play in before. I think we've gone through that before and I think we've gone through that before where they take advantage of an opportunity and show you that they want to play.
