Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has acquired a sixth-round pick from the Anaheim Ducks (previously acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes) in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft in exchange for forward Jarkko Ruutu.
Ruutu, 35, has recorded 10 points (two goals, eight assists) while adding 59 penalty minutes in 50 games with the Senators this season. Originally signed by the club as an unrestricted free agent on July 2, 2008, Ruutu has scored 21 goals and registered 36 assists while accumulating 324 penalty minutes in 210 games over two-plus seasons with the Senators. He added two goals and one assist in six playoff games for the team against Pittsburgh last season.
A native of Helsinki, Ruutu has recorded 140 points (57 goals, 83 assists) in addition to 1,040 penalty minutes in 629 career NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa.
Ruutu was originally selected by Vancouver with the Canucks’ first third-round pick (68th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
