The Ottawa Senators today assigned defenceman Mattias Karlsson
to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.
Karlsson, Ottawa’s fourth-round selection (135th overall) in the 2003 NHL entry draft, has been undergoing rehab with the Senators’ training and conditioning staff since September. He attended the Senators development camp in early July. Karlsson was invited to play for the Senators in the Kitchener Rookie Tournament in early September, but he suffered a right knee injury in Sweden in August and was unable to participate.
Karlsson has three years experience in the Swedish Elite Hockey League, playing with Brynäs and last season with Bofors IK. Born in Stora, Sweden, the 22-year-old Karlsson was tied for the team lead in scoring with 32 points (11 goals) in 2006-07 and added 34 penalty minutes in 44 games.
