OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler announced today that the club has acquired centre Matt Koalska from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenceman Tomas Malec. Koalska will report to the Senators American Hockey League affiliated, the Binghamton Senators.
The 26-year-old Koalska played in three games with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season before being loaned to the Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals. With Hershey, Koalska scored three goals and added two assists while recording four penalty minutes in 11 games. On Tuesday, Dec. 14 Koalska was returned to the Islanders organization. The centre has played in three career NHL games with the New York Islanders, collecting no points and two penalty minutes.
The 24-year-old Malec had one goal and 12 assists in 33 games with Binghamton this season. In 45 career NHL games with Carolina and Ottawa, he has recorded no goals, two assists and 47 penalty minutes.
