The Sabres stayed off the ice this morning, but did hold a team meeting at HSBC Arena just a little more than 12 hours after their 4-2 win over Boston last night in preparation for tonight’s game against the New York Islanders as they look for their third straight victory.

Last night’s win was clinched in the third period when Ryan Miller made 18 saves and Thomas Vanek scored the game-winning goal before setting up Jason Pominville’s insurance tally later in the period.  Cody McCormick and Nathan Gerbe also scored in the game.  With the victory, Buffalo is now 7-2-1 in the last 10 games.

“We know what we have to do and we’re kind of up against the wall right now,” McCormick said of the team’s recent stretch.  “We need the points and it’s desperate hockey for us right now.”

Vanek’s two-point night gives him four consecutive multi-point games while Tyler Ennis, who picked up a pair of assists, has notched three straight multi-point games.  Vanek, the team’s leading scorer with 18-21-39, has registered 14 points (5-9-14) in the last nine games.

In other news, Patrick Kaleta informed the media he will play tonight despite leaving last night’s game in the second period after taking a slap shot off the same hand that was previously injured.

"I went to the doctor again this morning and got everything looked at and was re-assured that I can play again tonight," Kaleta said.

“Pat feels better and thinks he can play.  Nothing has changed, there was no further damage. He just has to deal with some soreness,” said Lindy Ruff.

Ruff also said that Drew Stafford will miss his second straight game tonight with a mild groin injury.
