The Buffalo Sabres will collect food and financial donations before each of their four home games in February to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York. The player’s wives will collect the donations at the entrances of HSBC Arena before the games on Feb. 2, 4, 9 and 11.
"This generous gesture by the Buffalo Sabres is so important for us at this time of the year," said Clem Eckert, president and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY. "Hunger is a year round concern and after the holidays the donation of food products to us is low."
Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller
is the spokesperson for this campaign. He saw the need for donated food products first hand during a tour of the Food Bank's warehouse in Buffalo.
The Food Bank provides nutritious food to clients in close to 500 member agencies in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties. The Food Bank distributes more than 1 million pounds of food products each month to the agencies for the 100,000 individuals they serve. Children account for 40 percent of that total.
"Ryan and the Sabres understand our continued need for the donation of food and through this effort we know the generosity of the residents in WNY will be there again," Eckert said. "This community always comes through for those in need."
