by Staff Writer / Detroit Red Wings
DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings trimmed their roster to the required season-opening 23 players today. Forwards Matt Hussey and Krys Kolanos cleared waivers and were assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, as was defenseman Kyle Quincey.

Forward Valtteri Filppula and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson were placed on injured reserve.

New to the Wings this season are goalies Dominik Hasek and Joey MacDonald, center Jiri Hudler, left wing Tomas Kopecky, and defensemen Danny Markov and Brad Norton.

Hasek, 41, is making his third tour with the Red Wings. He helped the Wings to their most recent Stanley Cup title in 2002, and is returning to Detroit after a season with Ottawa.

For Markov, the Red Wings are his sixth team in eight seasons. In 58 games last season with Nashville, he had 11 assists.

Norton has played in 118 games with NHL stints in Ottawa, Washington, Los Angeles and Florida.

The Red Wings open the 2006-07 season at home at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks.
