DETROIT -- Following Friday’s National Hockey League action, the Red Wings’ potential first round playoff opponent is down to three teams: Columbus, Anaheim or St. Louis.
Tonight, Columbus hosts Minnesota at 7:00 pm ET and Anaheim travels to Phoenix at 8:00 pm ET. Depending up on the outcomes of tonight’s games, the seeds may not be decided until tomorrow when St. Louis travels to Colorado in the final game of the NHL regular season (5:00 pm ET).
6, 7, AND 8 SEED SCENARIOS Columbus will finish 6th by earning a point tonight. Columbus will finish 6th if they do not earn a point, and both Anaheim and St. Louis lose. Columbus will finish 7th if they don’t earn a point and Anaheim wins while St. Louis loses. Columbus can finish 8th if they don’t earn a point and Anaheim and St. Louis both win.
Anaheim will finish 6th if they win tonight and Columbus does not earn a point. Anaheim will finish 7th if all three teams (Columbus, Anaheim and St. Louis) earn the same number of points in their final game. Anaheim will finish 7th if Columbus earns a point and Anaheim does not earn less points in their final game than St. Louis. Anaheim will finish 8th if they lose tonight and St. Louis earns one more point than Anaheim did in the loss.
St. Louis will finish 6th if Columbus does not earn a point, Anaheim does not win and St. Louis wins tomorrow. St. Louis will finish 7th if Columbus earns a point and St. Louis earns one more point in their final game than Anaheim. St. Louis will finish 8th if they do not earn one more point than Anaheim OR two more than Columbus.
In other Western Conference action tonight, Vancouver can clinch the Pacific Division and No. 3 seed with a point at Colorado (3:00 pm ET). If Vancouver does not earn a point, Calgary could pass them with a victory vs. Edmonton (10:00 pm ET).
