Wings Encounter: Dennis Cholowski

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The Red Wings made Dennis Cholowski their first-round draft pick this past June.

Cholowski, a younger-than-he-looks 18-year-old, is a smooth-skating defenseman who is trying to get a little bit bigger and a little more physical as he gets older.

Cholowski was smaller as a kid but is now 6-foot-1, 177 pounds.

For now, Cholowski plans to play at St. Cloud State to continue his development.

Cholowski showed off his skating during development camp. Although the camp was for education, many of the Wings' front office staff were impressed.

Music: "I'm kind of an everything kind of guy. I'll listen to anything."

Superhero: "That's a tough one. Batman."

Birthday or Christmas present: "Probably my very first hockey stick when I was really young."

Hockey player growing up: "Scott Niedermayer."

Hockey team growing up: "I guess I'll have to say the Canucks. I grew up around there so I have to say them."

Hockey memory: "The draft, for sure, 100 percent."


What was your first concert?

"I've never been to a concert. Actually a few classical music ones but never any rock or country or anything like that."

If we checked your phone, what is your most-played song?

"I'm not really a big music listener on my own, I kind of just listen to whatever's on. I'm never really the kind of guy that has headphones on before a game."

Do you have any superstitions?

"Not particularly. I have my routine before a game but it's not really a superstition. If it gets changed, it gets changed."

Do you have any phobias or fears?

"Heights, for sure."

Do you have any siblings? How many?

"I do, one brother. Older."

Do you have a pet?

"I don't."

Who is your role model and why?

"It would be Scott Niedermayer because he's such a good person and obviously a great player as well."

If you were on Breaking Bad, which character would you be?

"Probably Saul Goodman, the lawyer."

What is your best talent outside of hockey?

"Having the ability to stay disciplined and do my homework would be the other talent."

Do you like roller coasters? Have you been to Cedar Point?

"I do. I haven't."

You signed your first big contract, what is the first thing you would buy?

"First thing would be a cut of my paycheck to my dad, for sure."

What career would you pursue if you weren't a hockey player?


What is your first hockey memory?

"Getting that first stick Christmas Day. I was very young."

Who would be in your all-time golf foursome?

"One would be Nick Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings, great player. Scott Niedermayer, another one. Then Bobby Orr, three favorite defensemen."

What do you think of the American presidential race?

"You know, I haven't followed it too much. I heard the whole hurrah about Donald Trump but I haven't followed it too much. I'll have to start looking into it."
