Wings announce free public Wi-Fi at JLA

by Alex DiFilippo / Detroit Red Wings

DETROIT – Olympia Entertainment and the Detroit Red Wings today announced the launch of free high-speed public Wi-Fi at Joe Louis Arena to improve reliability when sending and receiving phone calls and text messages, provide faster uploads to social media and enhance fan engagement when attending Red Wings games and Olympia Entertainment sporting and entertainment events at The Joe.

In partnership with SignalShare, the leading provider of mobile engagement solutions for mass audiences, and Extreme Networks, Inc., a leader in high performance networking, the Red Wings will officially unveil the new Wi-Fi system for fans at Joe Louis Arena when the team returns home from a two-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 31 to face the New York Islanders.

“Reliable connectivity is a must as we look to provide an unmatched live game experience for Red Wings fans and guests at other sporting and entertainment events at The Joe,” said Tom Wilson, President and CEO of Olympia Entertainment.

To access the Wi-Fi inside The Joe, guests will simply need to select “#JLAwifi” in their smart-phones. An opt-in page will then appear, requiring the user to accept the “Terms and Conditions” and input their name, an active email address and ZIP code. Users will then be connected to the Wi-Fi and simultaneously directed to a portal page.

“Since our testing period began in December, we’ve had more than 25,000 Red Wings fans log on to the new Wi-Fi network and the response has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Tod Caflisch, Director of Information Technology for the Red Wings. “We look forward to seeing those numbers increase during the stretch of the season as fans become more aware of the technology available when they visit The Joe.”

SignalShare’s LiveFi system is a cloud-based platform designed to help venues connect with a live audience, while Extreme’s IdentiFi® Wireless is a state-of-the-art wireless platform delivering high-density wireless performance tailored for indoor and outdoor arenas and stadiums. Together, the companies provide a thorough audience engagement solution to deliver safe and reliable connectivity and interactive in-game mobile experience to fans at Joe Louis Arena.

“SignalShare is thrilled to be working with the Red Wings – a storied franchise with fans passionate about their team and the in-game experience,” said Joe Costanzo, Founder and CTO of SignalShare. “With this deployment, fans receive always-on mobile Internet access, while the team gains a new platform to communicate, interact with, surprise and delight attendees.”

“The Detroit Red Wings have always been committed to delivering great experiences for their fans and are now using Extreme’s Wi-Fi technology to take it a step further, enabling the Red Wings to provide fast and reliable access to thousands of fans for their mobile needs,” said Norman Rice, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for Extreme Networks. “We are proud to have the Red Wings as our first NHL arena and look forward to a great relationship.”
