The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet
from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and placed defenseman Jakub Kindl
on injured reserve.
A native of Bayonne, France, Ouellet has appeared in nine games with the Red Wings, recording his first NHL point (Nov. 22 at Toronto) and NHL goal (Nov. 28 at New Jersey). He has also skated in 21 games with the Griffins, recording eight points (1-7-8), 16 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. The 21-year-old blueliner is in his second professional season and has played in 91 AHL games for Grand Rapids, tallying 25 points (5-20-25), 38 penalty minutes and a plus-eight rating, and 13 NHL games for Detroit, registering two points (1-1-2), two penalty minutes and a plus-three rating. Ouellet spent his major junior career in the QMJHL with the Montreal Juniors and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and was a two-time QMJHL First-Team All-Star, in addition to finishing as a finalist for the Emile (Butch) Bouchard Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2012. In 223 QMJHL games from 2009-13, he notched 160 points (41-119-160) and 177 penalty minutes.
