Red Wings assign four to Griffins

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today assigned forwards Tomas Jurco and Riley Sheahan, defenseman Xavier Ouellet and goaltender Jake Paterson to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

Jurco, 21, split his second professional season between Detroit and Grand Rapids, recording 15 points (8-7-15) in 36 regular-season games with the Red Wings after making his NHL debut on Dec. 15 versus Tampa Bay. The native of Kosice, Slovakia, also skated in 32 games with the Griffins and was leading the team with 32 points (13-19-32) at the time of his call-up. Jurco also represented his country at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, notching one goal in four games. Originally drafted by Detroit in the second round (35th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the 6-foot-2, 193-lb., forward played a big role in the Griffins’ 2013 Calder Cup championship, tying for the AHL postseason scoring lead with 14 points (8-6-14) in 24 games.

Sheahan, 22, skated in 42 NHL games this season and tied for 24th among league rookies with 24 points (9-15-24). The St. Catharines, Ontario, native also appeared in 31 games for the Griffins, tallying 18 points (8-10-18). A first-round pick of Detroit (21st overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Sheahan logged 72 games for Grand Rapids in 2012-13, notching 36 points (16-20-36). He also led the team in assists during the postseason and tied for first among AHL rookies with 16 points (3-13-16) in 24 games.

Ouellet, 20, appeared in four regular-season and one playoff game with the Red Wings after making his NHL debut on Oct. 21 versus San Jose. The Bayonne, France, native also skated in 70 AHL games with the Griffins this season, notching 17 points (4-13-17) and 22 penalty minutes. Originally drafted by Detroit in the second round (48th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Ouellet skated in 223 QMJHL games with the Montreal Juniors and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada from 2009-13 prior to turning professional, tallying 160 points (41-119-160) and 177 penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 200-lb., blueliner was also named to the QMJHL First All-Star Team and represented Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championships last season.

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Paterson has appeared in 142 games with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit since 2010-11, compiling a 70-54-12 record with a 3.44 goals against average, a 0.904 save percentage and four shutouts. He also appeared in 21 career OHL postseason games, showing a 7-14 record, a 3.89 goals against average and a 0.890 save percentage. The 19-year-old netminder recently capped off his third full season with the Spirit with a 24-18-2 record, a 3.41 goals against average and a 0.906 save percentage. Originally drafted by Detroit in the third round (80th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Paterson joined the Griffins at the conclusion of Saginaw’s season but has yet to make his first professional appearance.

Up 2-0 in their best-of-five, first-round series, the Griffins will continue their defense of the Calder Cup as the series shifts to Grand Rapids, with the first of three potential home games coming this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
