DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings Foundation and marketing department will be lending their support to the upcoming Windsor Classic presented by Investors Group, a two-day street hockey challenge for anyone age five and over taking place on Riverside Drive in Windsor, Ont., on December 28 and 29. Given the host city’s geographic proximity to both Hockeytown and Leafs Nation, competitors in the Windsor Classic will don attire supporting either Detroit or Toronto’s storied NHL franchises. Proceeds from this event will benefit The Downtown Mission of Windsor (DowntownMission.com).
Four teams from Knobby’s Kids (36 total players) will be competing in the Windsor Classic courtesy of the DRW Foundation. Knobby’s Kids (KnobbysKids.com) is a nonprofit organization founded by Jerry Slavik, Frank Spry and Knobby Knudsen dedicated to helping young athletes in Southwestern Ontario overcome financial obstacles associated with participating in team sports. The Red Wings also donated several autographed items that will be used as prizes for individual fundraisers.
In addition to the tournament itself, the Windsor Classic will feature a can/bottle drive and used hockey equipment collection. Live entertainment and special guest appearances from prominent hockey figures will also be staged over the course of the event. “We couldn’t be more excited for The Windsor Classic to start! There’s nothing better than Red Wings fans and Maple Leafs fans using their rivalry in a positive way to raise money for The Downtown Mission of Windsor,” said Trevor Whaling, organizer of The Windsor Classic presented by Investors Group.
