The NHL Alumni Signature Wine Series features Gordie Howe’s “Mr. Hockey” Chardonnay and Ted Lindsay’s “Terrible Ted’s Red” Cabernet Sauvignon. The Red Wings are one of six teams participating in this unique program, which combines wine, hockey and charity.
“The NHL Alumni Association is excited to undertake this new endeavor, promoting and assisting the many wonderful charities that are affiliated with this wine program,” said NHL Alumni Association Executive Director Mark Napier.
For every bottle of wine sold, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charity of each player’s choice, as well as a charity of the Red Wings’ Alumni Association’s choice. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the NHL Alumni Association’s Hockey’s Greatest Family Fund, which helps bring together former players to support charitable causes, assist former players in life after hockey and generally promote the game of hockey.
The wine, produced in California by Ironstone Vineyards, will be available in retail stores and restaurants throughout Michigan and will be distributed by J. Lewis Cooper Co. of Michigan.
Howe will be donating his proceeds to The Howe Foundation, which develops programs for children in physical or psychological crisis. Lindsay will be donating his proceeds to The Ted Lindsay Foundation, which he co-founded to help research into the cause and cure of autism – a cause to which he is extremely dedicated.
The NHL Alumni Signature Wine Series boasts 12 different bottles all bearing a gold-relief likeness of some of hockey’s greatest legends. The five other teams featuring NHL alumni are the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers.
