New public safety and improved access

by Alex DiFilippo / Detroit Red Wings

DETROIT – The Red Wings have announced a new clear bag policy for all Red Wings games held at Joe Louis Arena to provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite entry for fans.

Fans who have non-compliant bags will be asked to return their bags to their cars.

Beginning with the Red Wings first preseason home game on Tuesday, Sept. 23 against the Chicago Blackhawks, fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag, package or container into Joe Louis Arena for all Red Wings games. Guests with a non-compliant bag will be asked to return their bag to their vehicle before entering The Joe.

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12.”
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar style).
  • Small clutch bags not exceeding 9” x 6” – approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap – can be taken into The Joe with one of the clear plastic bag options above.

The new policy is designed to shorten lines by speeding the security screening process for fans as they enter Joe Louis Arena, while also providing an increased sense of safety and supporting the Department of Homeland Security’s “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, seat cushions, luggage of any size, computer bags, camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size. An exception will be made for medically necessary items and diaper bags after proper inspection at a designated door.

Similar public safety measures have been successfully established by all 32 NFL teams and at other venues throughout the state and country. Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich., do not permit any bags.

Fans can continue to carry smart phones, tablets, cameras and binoculars into Joe Louis Arena, as well as personal items that fit into clothing pockets.

The new policy will not affect working personnel or media at Joe Louis Arena. Such parties will continue to enter at the West Entrance where they will be subject to the standard screening and bag inspections previously in effect at The Joe and all other NHL arenas.
