DETROIT -- The Red Wings today announced that goaltender Joey MacDonald has been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
MacDonald, 30, was recalled by the Red Wings on October 28. He served as Detroit’s backup goaltender for 15 games. The Pictou, Nova Scotia, native appeared in one game, playing the third period of a 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers on November 24. MacDonald made seven saves on eight shots on goal.
The assignment of MacDonald marks the return of goaltender Chris Osgood to Detroit’s lineup. The 37-year-old has missed the last 13 games due to a groin injury. Osgood last appeared in net for Detroit in a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators on October 30. He is currently two wins shy of becoming the 10th goaltender in NHL history to record 400 wins.
