The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Adam Almquist
from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
A native of Huskvarna, Sweden, Almquist has skated in 60 games with the Griffins this season, placing second on the team with 45 points (4-41-45). He ranks third among all AHL defensemen in scoring and is tied for third in the league in assists. The 23-year-old defenseman made his NHL debut with Detroit on Nov. 4 and scored his first NHL goal in his second game with the club, Nov. 7 versus Dallas. In 131 career AHL games, the 5-foot-11, 173-lb., blueliner has tallied 76 points (14-62-76) and 86 penalty minutes. He also recorded 10 points (3-7-10) in 21 games during Grand Rapids’ Calder Cup run in 2013. Originally drafted by Detroit in the seventh round (210th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Almquist registered 35 points (5-30-35) in 122 SHL games with HV-71 prior to making the move to North America.
Sitting one point back of the Eastern Conference’s final wild card spot, the Red Wings (31-24-13) will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (FOX Sports Detroit/97.1 The Ticket).
