Rangers get Antropov in deal with Toronto

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired forward Nik Antropov from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional draft pick.

Antropov, 29, was originally Toronto’s first round choice, 10th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.  He has appeared in 63 games with the Maple Leafs this season, registering 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 points, along with 24 penalty minutes.  He ranked second on the club in goals (21), points (46) and shots (171), and was tied for fifth on Toronto in assists (25).  He also tied for second on the team with six power play goals, and tied for third with two game-winning goals.

Antropov has posted nine multiple-point performances this season, including four, three-point efforts.  He recorded a season-high, five-game scoring streak from October 18 at Pittsburgh to October 28 vs. Tampa Bay, registering six points (four goals and two assists) over the span.  He also notched nine points (three goals and six assists) in a four-game span from December 16 vs. New Jersey to December 22 at Atlanta.

Last season, the Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan native registered 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points, along with 92 penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating.  He established career-highs in goals (26), assists (30), points (56), and power play goals (12).  He also tied his career-high with 72 games played.  He led Toronto in power play goals (12) and game-winning goals (five), and ranked second on the team in goals (26), points (56) and plus/minus rating (plus-10).

He also finished fourth on the club with 30 assists.  Antropov registered 16 multiple-point games, including four, three-point efforts.  He recorded 15 points (six goals and nine assists) during a nine-game stretch from November 27, 2007 vs. Montreal to December 15, 2007 at Montreal.  He notched his second career hat trick with a natural hat trick on December 6, 2007 vs. the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.  He also skated in his 400th NHL game on November 29, 2007 at Atlanta, and collected his 200th career point on October 18 vs. Florida.

The 6-6, 230-pounder has skated in 509 regular season contests with Toronto, recording 125 goals and 166 assists for 291 points, along with 477 penalty minutes.  In 2002-03, he established career-highs in games played (72 - tie), penalty minutes (124), power play assists (11), and game-winning goals (six).  He notched his first career hat trick as a rookie on December 20, 1999 at Florida, while finishing with 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points along with a career-best, plus-14 rating in 66 games.

He made his NHL debut on October 13, 1999 vs. Florida.  In addition, Antropov has tallied two goals and three assists for five points, along with 34 penalty minutes in 28 career NHL post-season contests.
