Rangers Acquire D Andrew Hutchinson and F Joe Barnes

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, center Joe Barnes and a third round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for center Matt Cullen.
Hutchinson, 27, skated in 41 games with the Carolina Hurricanes this past season, registering three goals and 11 assists for 14 points, along with 30 penalty minutes. He established career-highs in games played (41), assists (11), points (14) and penalty minutes (30).
The 6-2, 206-pound defenseman has appeared in 95 career NHL games with Carolina and Nashville, registering 10 goals and 23 assists for 33 points, along with 52 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 190 career American Hockey League (AHL) contests, recording 31 goals and 65 assists for 96 points, along with 158 penalty minutes. In 2004-05, Hutchinson set AHL career-highs in games played (76), assists (35), points (45) and penalty minutes (79).
Prior to turning professional, Hutchinson collected 78 points (19 goals and 59 assists) and 160 penalty minutes in 160 career games with the Michigan State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). He was named to the NCAA West Second All-American in 2002 and was twice selected to the CCHA Second All-Star Team in 2001 and 2002. He was also named the CCHA’s best defenseman his junior season and earned CCHA All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive season in 2000-01.
A native of Evanston, Illinois, Hutchinson was originally Nashville’s fourth choice (second round), 54th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by Carolina on June 29, 2005 from Nashville in exchange for Phoenix’s third round selection in 2005.
Barnes, 21, appeared in 15 games with Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL) this past season, his first pro campaign, registering two goals and one assist, along with 19 penalty minutes. Prior to joining the pro ranks, Barnes recorded 152 points (69 goals and 83 assists) and 266 penalty minutes in 240 career games in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Saskatoon. In 2005-06, the 6-3, 212-pound center notched 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points, along with a plus-11 rating in 55 games with Saskatoon. His 25 goals ranked fourth on the team.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was originally Carolina’s third choice, 64th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Cullen, 30, appeared in 80 games with New York this past season, registering 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points, along with 52 penalty minutes. He will be returning to Carolina where he notched career-highs in goals (25) and points (49), and helped the Hurricanes capture the Stanley Cup in 2006.
