Messier Ties for Fourth on NHL All-Time Assist List

New York Rangers’ captain Mark Messier registered an assist tonight on Sandy McCarthy’s tally at 15:19 of the second period, putting him into a tie with his former Edmonton Oilers teammate Paul Coffey for fourth place on the NHL's all-time assists list (1,135).

Messier, in his 23rd NHL season and eighth with the Rangers, has now tallied 653 goals and 1,135 assists for 1,788 points, along with 1,922 penalty minutes in 1,571 career matches with the Rangers, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. He is the third leading scorer in NHL history (1,788), is tied with Brett Hull for first among active goal scorers (653) and ranks second behind Carolina’s Ron Francis in assists among active players (1,149).

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Messier was originally Edmonton's second round choice, 48th overall, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft.
