The New York Rangers announced today that center Manny Malhotra has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. He becomes available to the club following the Guelph Storm’s elimination from the Ontario Hockey League playoffs last night. He was assigned by the Rangers to Guelph (OHL) on March 14.
Malhotra, 19, has appeared in 27 contests with the Rangers this season, collecting four penalty minutes. He has also notched four points (one goal, three assists) in eight contests with Hartford (AHL) this season. Malhotra appeared in five games with Guelph (OHL), collecting four points (two goals, two assists), while asdding two assists in six playoff outings.
The 6-2, 210-pound center has tallied eight goals and eight assists for 16 points, along with 17 penalty minutes in 100 games with New York over the last two seasons. Malhotra skated in his 100th NHL game on February 13 vs. the New York Islanders. He has notched 34 goals and 65 assists for 99 points in 123 career junior matches with Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League. He captained Team Canada at the 2000 World Junior Championships in Sweden, collecting two assists and eight penalty minutes in seven tournament matches, helping lead the club to a bronze medal finish. He also represented Team Canada at the 1998 World Junior Championships in Finland, appearing in all seven matches with the club. Malhotra captained the gold medal-winning Team Canada squad at the under-18 Tournament in the Czech Republic in 1997.
The native of Mississauga, Ontario was New York’s first choice, seventh overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
