As the third and final week of the Rangers Development Camp has passed, Head Coach and Vice President of Player Development Tom Renney checks in with a recap from Calgary, Alberta.
As the Rangers Prospect Development Camp concludes its third year, it is exciting to see that the organization has a good-looking future. This was, without a doubt, our most successful Camp based on a couple of things.
Of the 30 players that attended any/all of the three weeks, no more then four were free agents. This means that 26 players in each week, were bona fide Ranger prospects. Also, include the fact that Henrik Lundqvist
, Jarkko Immonen, Petr Prucha, Fedor Tyutin and Maxim Kondratiev did not make it, and one has to be quite excited about the long-term look of the team.
Another aspect of the Camp, which separated this Camp from the first two, was the overall skill level of this group that was assembled. The game must be recognized for the ability of its participants, and certainly Hugh Jessiman, Bruce Graham, Al Montoya, Thomas Pock and Zdenek Bahensky
- to name a few - demonstrate the necessary skill to play.
As exciting as this is, so too is the marriage of this skill and the grit and character of others. Ryan Hollweg, Corey Potter, Nate Guenin, Jake Taylor, Greg Moore and Roman Psurny
are the type of people that exude a strong, contagious character, and will allow the Rangers to be a tough team to play against in the future, both at home or on the road.
The future does look bright for the organization, I have no doubt about that. But having said that, I am under no illusion that we have all the right answers. The Development Camp will continue to serve its purpose in the future, and part of the outcome of the Camp, is to realize not only who can play, but who can't play ... or who does not fit into our plans. This is about quality control too and if we hope to change the image of our team for the long-term, we have to make tough decisions now.
Hopefully, as we make these choices, those players who have participated in the Rangers Development Camp are waiting in the wings ... to make a difference.
