Wade Belak is known for standing up to bullies on the ice, and he told students at Heritage Middle School in Thompson Station, TN that they can take a stand against bullies at their school.
His message to the Middle Schoolers was simple – choose to be a hero. Belak spoke out against bullying and said that students can do the right thing by standing up to bullies and for those being bullied.
Belak knows students need to be safe, welcome and comfortable when they come to school, and he offered several options to the kids to make sure they feel that way every day, explaining that courage comes from people who stand up for one another.
Belak also emphasized that everyone is different – each person has their own unique talents and abilities, and everyone deserves respect in and out of school. He said if each person uses their different talents and abilities together, they can stop the bullies in their school.
During his discussion with students, Belak talked about how hockey players stand up for one another on the ice when things get out of hand, and how students need to make sure they do the same without breaking the rules.
Students were also given t-shirts that displayed the anti-bullying philosophy. A checklist on the back of each shirt showed that students would decide to stand up to bullies by helping instead of staying quiet.
