Nashville Predators 2012 draftee Jimmy Vesey was among 34 prospects to make the first cut at USA Hockey's Junior Evaluation Camp. Vesey opened the camp with 1 goal and 1 assist in his first three games. Team USA will practice today, followed by games against Team Finland on Wednesday and Saturday and a game against Team Sweden on Thursday.
A third round pick by the Preds in this summer's NHL Entry Draft, Vesey was the MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in the Eastern Junior Hockey League during the 2011-12 season, leading the League in points (91) and goals (48). Vesey will play NCAA hockey this coming season at Harvard.
Fellow Preds 2012 draftees Pontus Aberg (2nd Round) and Max Gortz (6th Round) are participating in the Junior Evaluation Tournament for Team Sweden. Aberg scored the game's opening goal and assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in Sweden's 5-1 win over Team USA-Blue on Monday.
Miikka Salomaki, a second round pick by the Preds in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, is a member of Team Finland for the Tournament. Salomaki was held scoreless in Finland's opener, a 5-4 loss to Team USA-White on Monday, by is projected to be one of the top players for the Finnish Junior Team this year.
