Update: Ellis, Ekholm, Saros at World Championship

by Brooks Bratten / Nashville Predators

Two of the Nashville Predators representatives skating at the 2016 IIHF World Championship met on Thursday, and one of those teams is decisively moving on to the semifinals.

Ryan Ellis and Team Canada topped Mattias Ekholm and Team Sweden 6-0 in their quarterfinal meeting, putting an end to Ekholm’s chance at the title. Ellis is in search of his first World Championship crown, with his only other appearance in the tournament coming in 2014.

Ekholm finished with one goal and 13 shots in two games for Sweden; Ellis has one assist and seven shots on goal through three outings.

Ellis and the Canadians will face Team USA on Saturday in the semifinals, where the winner will advance to the gold medal game on Sunday. Canada and USA face off at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, with the game available to watch on NBC Sports Live Extra.

Goaltender Juuse Saros, who made his NHL debut last season for the Preds, has also seen time with Team Finland during the current tournament, posting two shutouts in two starts. Saros has blanked Hungary and Slovakia, stopping all 27 shots he’s faced. Finland will face Russia in the other semifinal matchup on Saturday.
