Training Camp Recap: Day 15

by Brooks Bratten / Nashville Predators

The compete level was ramped up once again on Day 15 of Predators training camp at Centennial Sportsplex.

Head Coach Peter Laviolette ran the club through a number of high tempo drills through the first half of the day, while the latter portions of the session were reserved for some special teams work, as well as select players taking part in shootout practice.

Prior to the start of the practice, goaltenders Pekka Rinne and Carter Hutton were on the ice with Goaltending Coach Ben Vanderklok, with Vanderklok utilizing a ramp-like piece of metal placed in the slot to help simulate deflections. Vanderklok took slap shots low to the ice, allowing the puck to ride up the ramp and force the goaltenders to react to the changed trajectory of the biscuit.

Forwards Paul Gaustad (lower-body injury) and Taylor Beck (work visa) were back at practice today, with Gaustad taking his spot between wingers Eric Nystrom and Rich Clune.

The line combinations on Thursday looked like this:

Forwards:

Neal—Ribeiro—Bourque

Jokinen—Roy—Wilson

Smith—Jarnkrok—Forsberg

Nystrom—Gaustad—Clune

(Beck and Fiala rotated in and out)

Defensemen:

Josi—Weber

Volchenkov—Jones

(Bartley, Ellis, Ekholm, Alm & Piskula rotated with one another)

Help Me Help You:

Gabriel Bourque was one of the players taking part in today’s shootout work, scoring a bit of a fluke goal on Rinne. After Rinne lost his stick behind the net on the sequence, Bourque was kind enough to return the lumber to his goaltender.

“I lost the puck and it went in,” Bourque quipped. “It was the first time I've scored a goal in the shootout on him, so I tried to be nice.”

Page-Turner?

Not only does defenseman Roman Josi skate alongside Shea Weber on the ice, but the two also sit right beside each other in the locker room at Centennial. When asked if the chemistry from last season is returning between the pair, Josi couldn’t help but jab his D-partner.

“No, he’s been on a different page this year, I don’t know what’s wrong with him,” Josi joked, which was quickly followed by Weber stating: “[I’m on] page 42 and you’re on 43.”

“It’s obviously great for me to get the chance to play with him again,” Josi said. “We played almost the whole year last year so it shouldn’t take us too long to get that chemistry again. But like I've always said, I can’t speak too highly about him right now, he’s sitting right next to me.”
