Miikka Salomaki was added to Finland’s 2014 World Championship roster over the weekend, bringing Nashville’s representation at the tournament – which starts Friday in Minsk, Belarus – to 12 players and staff members.
The breakdown is as follows:
United States: Phil Housley (Assistant Coach), Lawrence Feloney (Video Coordinator), Seth Jones and Craig Smith
Finland: Miikka Salomaki, Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros
Sweden: Calle Jarnkrok and Mattias Ekholm
Switzerland: Roman Josi and Simon Moser
Canada: Ryan Ellis
Salomaki spent his first season in North America with the Milwaukee Admirals in 2013-14, leading the team and tying for fifth among AHL rookies in points (20g-30a-50pts).
Nashville’s second selection, 52nd overall (second round) in the 2011 Entry Draft, has represented his country in at least one international tournament in each of the last four years. In his third consecutive World Junior Championship tournament in 2013, he tied for eighth among all tournament skaters in points (3g-5a-8pts, 6gp); he was named one of Finland’s three best players at the 2011 Under-18 World Championships after tying for sixth in tournament goals (4) after helping Finland to a bronze medal at the 2010 U-18 World Championship. He also participated in the 2010 World Under-17 Challenge.
Switzerland vs. Russia and Canada vs. France get the tournament started on Friday at 8:45 a.m. CT, followed by Belarus vs. United States and Slovakia vs. Czech Republic at 12:45 p.m. CT. Finland (vs. Latvia) and Sweden (vs. Denmark) play their first games at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday.
