Predators up for the Ice Bucket Challenge

by Kevin Wilson / Nashville Predators

It might be the dog days of summer, but the Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon is helping folks across the nation stay cool and helping find a cure for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) at the same time. The Nashville Predators and the rest of the National Hockey League’s players, coaches, staff and fans are showing they are up for the challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is simple: either donate $100 to the ALS Association (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), or dump a bucket of ice water on your head within 24 hours of a challenge being issued. Those left cold and wet then have the opportunity to challenge three more people through the trending hashtag #icebucketchallenge on social media.

The most notable of challenges to come out of Smashville was Head Coach Peter Laviolette, who has challenged all Predators Season-Ticket Holders to participate, while also bringing Assistant General Manager Paul Fenton into the fray.

Players are certainly not excluded from the Challenge, with Predators forward Colin Wilson challenging teammates Eric Nystrom, Rich Clune and Seth Jones.

While we have yet to hear from Nystrom and Clune (you can call them out on Twitter @enystrom23 and @richcluneshow), Jones showed he was quickly up to the task, challenging former Portland Winterhawk teammate and Predators 2012 third-round selection Brendan Leipsic, as well as Ty Rattie and Derrick Pouliot, also members of the 2013 WHL Champion Winterhawks.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nervous system, with baseball legend Lou Gehrig being its first and most prominent victim. There is no known cure for ALS, but the ALS Association's mission is to "lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support."
