Following the announcement of Chris Mason's re-signing, the goaltender and Predators general manager David Poile spoke to the media regarding the deal.
Goalie Chris Mason
On the past 48 hours since being resigned and having a child...
"It has been a crazy 48 hours, but we are so glad to be back because we love it here. You get such a connection with the organization, the community and the city. Everyone has been great to me, from the fans, to organization. I don'
t have much to compare it with, but I can'
t imagine anything being better than this. I thank them for wanting me back and I look forward to getting through the workouts and to training camp."
"It has been absolutely crazy, I don't think I have talked on the phone this much in my entire life. Some of it was when my wife was in labor. It has been two of the happiest days of my life and I am just happy to be here and happy with the situation I am in."
On coming back to Nashville...
"I was hoping I was going to land somewhere and have an opportunity to play, and I didn't know where that was going to be. I was planning on that, then, I talked to Nashville on June 29, and they expressed interest in me, which I was excited about, and we got the deal done in the last minutes today. My wife and I are just beside ourselves with what is going on in our life right now."
"Basically it came down to us loving it here and wanting to be here, and I don't know what is going to happen down the road, but that was the biggest factor."
"I hope the Tomas (Vokoun) is healthy and ready to go, he is one of my best friends. After that, we will see what happens when the season starts. I haven't thought about the hockey aspect of it that much."
Vice President/General Manager David Poile
On the decision to resign Chris Mason...
"I guess the best thing is that we still had and have a good relationship with Chris, and he was one of the best free agents out there. But, at the end of the day, we thought that the combination we have with he and Tomas is among the best in the league. The chemistry we have on the team, and the work ethic he brings to it, is outstanding."
"It is like in football if your quarterback goes down, you better have a good backup, and when Tomas went down, Chris came in and played great at the end of the year and also in the playoffs. So, in the 11th hour it just seemed to make sense to everyone. This morning, we sat down with all our coaches and we talked to Chris and his agent and got the thing done before free agency."
On team chemistry and Mason's contribution to that...
We have come a long way in the past year, and when you do that, it usually means you have good team chemistry. The guys are friends both on and off the ice and that helps. The other day, Tomas Vokoun was in our office and he when his cell phone rang it was Chris Mason wanting to tell him about his new baby. Things like that mean a lot to me when you are putting a team together. You want guys that feel good about each other not only on the ice, but off it as well if at all possible.
