Pihlstrom Powers Finland Past Sweden

Antti Pihlstrom scored two goals and Janne Niskala tallied one goal as Team Finland shut out Team Sweden 4-0 to win the Bronze Medal at the 2008 World Championships.


Pihlstrom finished the tournament with five goals and seven points, leading Team Finland in goals and ranking tied for second on the team in points. Niskala led team defensemen with two goals and four points during the tournament. The third Pred on Team Finland, Ville Koistinen, chipped in one goal and one assist during the tournament, while averaging 16:30 of ice time per game, second most among team defensemen.

For Team Sweden, Preds prospect Patric Hornqvist led the team with six goals and 38 shots during the tournament, while averaging 16:35 of ice time, second among team forwards (trailing only Washington Capitals rookie phenom Nicklas Backstrom).

Heading into tomorrow's Canada/Russia Gold Medal Game, Hornqvist's six goals are tied for second most in the tournament, while Pihlstrom's five rank tied for seventh.

In the Bronze Medal Game, Finland grabbed a first period lead on Pihlstrom's first goal of the game, an even strength score at the 11:31 mark. Niskala pushed the lead to 2-0, 2:13 later.

The teams skated to a scoreless second period which featured eight minor penalties, including matching roughing penalties to Hornqvist and Mikko Koivu from an altercation 24 seconds into the frame.

Pihlstrom pushed the score to 3-0 just 2:18 into the third period with his second of the game, also an even strength goal. Mikko Koivu closed out the scoring with an empty net shorthanded goal at the 17:35 mark.
