NP.COM: Jonathan Drouin At A Glance

by Jimi Russell / Nashville Predators
Leading into the 2013 NHL Entry Draft on June 30 in Newark, N.J., is going to provide an in-depth look at each of this year's top six prospects.

This week's edition looks at Halifax forward, Jonathan Drouin.

Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)
5’11”,186 lbs. • Left Wing • Shoots: Left
March 28, 1995
Huberdeau, Quebec
No. 3 North American Skater

Prospect at-a-glance: Coming into his second season in Halifax, Drouin didn’t rank highly on many draft boards, but playing alongside fellow Top Five prospect, Nathan MacKinnon, helped propel Drouin into everyone’s mind. The talented winger tallied 41 goals, 105 points and a +48 rating in 49 games on the way to being crowned the QMJHL’s Most Valuable Player and Best Pro Prospect in 2012-13. Drouin helped lead the Mooseheads to the 2013 President's Cup as QMJHL Champions and the 2013 Memorial Cup. The Huberdeau, Que., native was also named the CHL's Player of the Year in 2013.

Preds Chief Amateur Scout Jeff Kealty’s player synopsis: “He is an electric offensive player,” Kealty said. “He has great puck skills and creativity. He averaged over two points a game in the Quebec league this year, and now he’s doing it again in the playoffs. He is one of those guys that brings you out of your seat when you watch him play. He has not only the offensive skill to produce and make plays, but he’s got some of that flare to him that a lot of the stars in the game have.”

“His skill set is dynamic,” TSN Analyst Bob McKenzie said. “He is arguably the most exciting, creative and skilled player in the draft. He is an offensive game-breaker. Four of the 10 scouts surveyed ranked Drouin ahead of MacKinnon and one scout ranked him as the top player in the draft.”

“When you’re assessing stick still with him, he’s off the charts in terms of his ability to make plays and handle the puck,” Edmonton Oilers General Manager Craig MacTavish said. “He’s shown jaw-dropping displays of skill at times. I think that he has been a really good complement to Nathan (MacKinnon) in terms of getting the puck to players on the fly. Those two players definitely have a lot of synergy between them.”

"He's an unbelievable player," fellow prospect Nathan MacKinnon said of his Halifax teammate. "He's got some puck skills I've never seen before. He can do some things that I've never seen. It's great watching him, especially in practice, do his thing, deke around out there. Not just for me, but for the rest of the team. It pushes you to get better and work hard."

“A wizard with the puck, Drouin has already lit up the highlight reels by making fans' jaws drop and opposing defenders look foolish. He pairs his magical stickhandling ability with great lower-body strength that makes it nearly impossible to knock him off the puck. Meanwhile, his on-ice vision and ability to slow the game down makes him a threat both in scoring a goal himself and setting up a teammate with an excellent chance. A dynamic offensive forward that makes his linemates better.” – Hockey’s Future

Something you may not know: Drouin won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and again represented his country as a 17-year old at this year’s World Juniors. In addition to being named the QMJHL’s MVP and Best Pro Prospect in 2012-13, the animated winger also won the league’s Best Personality of the Year Award.

Comparable player(s): Martin St. Louis (Tampa Bay), Patrick Kane (Chicago), Jordan Eberle (Edmonton).
