The Predators took a break from the grind of training camp on Monday afternoon (Sept 17) to help the Predators Foundation raise more than $50,000 at the 10th annual Dr. Mac Memorial Golf Tournament held at the Hermitage Memorial Golf Course.
Thirty-three foursomes and more than 70 volunteers participated in the tourney, named after Dr. James McPherson, the team dentist from the Predators’ inception until his untimely passing in 2004. A portion of the money raised now goes toward funding a dental scholarship in Dr. McPherson’s name.
“I love the golf tournament for the fact that the people who come out are – a.) supporting the Predators and getting to meet the guys, and b.) they are our sponsors so they get to help out the community since all the money goes to local and area causes in Nashville,” head coach Barry Trotz said. “It is a good day, and a good break from camp – the guys get to relax a bit before getting back to work on Tuesday.”
After lunch provided by Applebee’s, each group was greeted by a Predator at tee boxes and greens throughout the course and, under the best-ball format, foursomes could use any drive or putt a player or coach hit for them.
“We had a great day – with the format the way it is you get to meet
everyone from each group as they come to your hole,” goaltender Chris Mason said. “It was good to talk to everyone; they are all excited about the season and that is encouraging to me and the rest of the team.”
Following the day’s events, thousands of dollars in prizes were handed out to all the participants, with the tournament champions - Connie Herrell, Charles May, Dick Simpson and Scott Snoyer representing FastSigns - being invited to hit the road with the team when it travels to St. Louis to take on the Blues on Oct. 10.
Other contests that ran throughout the day included “closest to the pin,” “longest putt,” and the “Hockey Net on the Fairway” promotion, where those who put their ball through a regulation-sized net on the par-four second hole advanced to the green.
“We owe a great deal of thanks to all the teams that participated in the tournament, not to mention our sponsors, who donated products or prizes, so everyone walked away with a prize at the end of the day,” said Gerry Helper, president of the Predators Foundation. “All in all it was a spectacular day.”
