Kamenev, a big, strong, two-way center, was chosen by the Nashville Predators in the second round (No. 42) of the 2014 NHL Draft. He came to Colorado as part of the three-team trade between the Predators, Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators involving Matt Duchene, Kyle Turris and Samuel Girard on Nov. 5, 2017.
Kamenev was assigned to San Antonio of the American Hockey League before making his Avalanche debut centering for Sven Andrighetto and Nail Yakupov on Nov. 16, 2017. During the game, Kamenev broke his forearm after a check from Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik and did not return until March 18, 2018. He ended up going scoreless in three games for Colorado.
