Matteau was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round (No. 29) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
He played 17 games for the Devils during the 2012-13 season and scored his first NHL goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb. 9, 2013.

Matteau played the majority of the next two seasons with Albany of the American Hockey League and was traded by the Devils to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Devante Smith-Pelly on March 1, 2016. He had one assist in 12 games for the Canadiens.
After playing 2016-17 season with Montreal's AHL affiliate in St. John's, Matteau signed with the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent on July 1, 2017. He played most of the 2017-18 season with Chicago of the AHL but had one assist in eight games for Vegas.
Matteau signed an AHL contract with Cleveland for the 2019-20 season and scored 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) in 50 games. He signed a two-year, two-way contract with Columbus on Feb. 19, 2020 and scored in his Blue Jackets debut the next day.
He is the son of former NHL forward Stephane Matteau.
