Russell played for youth teams in his native Denmark before moving to Sweden in 2009 to play for the youth ranks of Linkoping HC until 2013. He headed to North American to play one season for Waterloo of the United States Hockey League, where he had 49 points (29 goals, 20 assists).
He attended St. Cloud State University, where in his sophomore season helped it win the National Collegiate Hockey Conference title with 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) in 41 games.

Russell signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on May 9, 2016. He debuted for the Oilers against the Calgary Flames on Nov. 17, 2018 to become the 12th Denmark-born player to skate in the NHL.
After three seasons with Bakersfield of the American Hockey League, Russell's NHL debut came on November 17, 2018, for the Oilers against the Calgary Flames. Russell's total ice time was 8 minutes and 37 seconds and he recorded 0 shots on goal. He is the 12th Danish player to play in the NHL.
