Nolan played minor hockey in Winnipeg and was selected by Brandon with the No. 4 pick of the 2013 Western Hockey League draft. He led WHL rookies with 30 goals in 2014-15 and was named the league's rookie of the year. In 2015-16, he was fifth in the WHL with 102 points (41 goals, 61 assists) in 72 games. Patrick was even better during the playoffs, tying for the WHL lead with 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) and winning the postseason MVP award after helping Brandon reach the Memorial Cup.
Injuries limited Patrick to 33 games in 2016-17, but he had 46 points (20 goals, 26 assists).
