Scoring a goal and four assists for Sweden at the 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championship as well as making his debut with HV 71 in Sweden in 2004-05, Hjalmarsson was selected by the Blackhawks in the fourth round (No. 108) of the 2005 NHL Draft.

Scoring a goal and four assists for Sweden at the 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championship as well as making his debut with HV 71 in Sweden in 2004-05, Hjalmarsson was selected by the Blackhawks in the fourth round (No. 108) of the 2005 NHL Draft.
Playing two more years at home and skating for Sweden in the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship, Hjalmarsson made the move to North America and his NHL debut against the Dallas Stars on Feb. 28, 2008. His first NHL point was an assist against the St. Louis Blues on March 23, 2008.
Hjalmarsson played 21 games for Chicago in 2008-09 and scored his first NHL goal against the Detroit Red Wings on April 11, 2009. Making his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, Hjalmarsson played 17 games and had his first Stanley Cup Playoff point with an assist against the Calgary Flames on April 25, 2009.
Playing his first full NHL season in 2009-10, Hjalmarsson had 17 points in 77 games and eight points in 22 postseason games to help Chicago win the Stanley Cup. He scored his first NHL playoff goal against the Nashville Predators on April 24, 2010.
In 2011-12, Hjalmarsson had 14 assists and 15 points in 69 games and was second on the Blackhawks with 142 blocked shots. He was plus-15 during the 2012-13 regular season and had five assists in 23 playoff games to help Chicago win the Cup for the second time in four seasons.
In 2013-14, Hjalmarsson had 22 assists and 26 points in 81 games and was second in the playoffs with 57 blocked shots. He earned a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, ranking second among Sweden defensemen with 18:20 of ice time per game.
Hjalmarsson had 19 points in 82 regular-season games in 2014-15 and was second on the Blackhawks with 127 blocked shots. He scored his 100th NHL point with a goal against the Los Angeles Kings on March 30, 2015 and had six points in 23 games when Chicago won the Stanley Cup again in 2015.
Hjalmarsson's tenure with the Blackhawks ended after 10 seasons when he was traded to the Arizona Coyotes on June 23, 2017. He named an alternate captain to begin the 2017-18 season.
