A first-round pick (No. 17) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2011 NHL Draft, Beaulieu came to prominence during a four-season stint with Saint John in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where his coaches included his father, Jacques, and future NHL coach Gerard Gallant. In his final season there, 2011-2012, he helped Saint John win the Memorial Cup and was named to the tournament's all-star team.

The next season, Beaulieu earned a spot with Team Canada for the IIHF World Junior Championship, helping to lead his country to the semifinals, where Canada lost to Russia.
He turned pro in 2012 and spent most of his initial two years in the Canadiens organization with Hamilton of the American Hockey League. Beaulieu became a regular with Montreal in 2014-15, playing 64 games and finishing fifth on the Canadiens with 69 blocks.
After finishing with an NHL career-high 28 points (four goals, 24 assists) in 2016-17, Beaulieu was traded to the Buffalo Sabres on June 17, 2017. He most of the next two seasons with the Sabres before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 25, 2019.
