Bournival was selected in the third round (No. 71) of the 2010 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche after he had 62 points (24 goals, 38 assists) in 58 games for Shawinigan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
He was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens in a trade Nov. 11, 2010, and signed a three-year, entry-level contract on Dec. 21, 2011.

In 2011-12, Bournival had 56 points (30 goals, 26 assists) in 41 games with Shawinigan, which won its first Memorial Cup championship. The following season, he played with Hamilton of the American Hockey League and had 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists) in 69 games.
Bournival made his NHL debut with the Canadiens on Oct. 5, 2013 against the Philadelphia Flyers and scored his first career goal in a 5-3 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 17. He finished the season with 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 60 games.
After splitting time in 2014-15 between Montreal and Hamilton, Bournival was limited to 20 games with St. John's of the AHL in 2015-16 because of post-concussion symptoms. He signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1, 2016.
Bournival played in 19 games with the Lightning and had three points (two goals, one assist) in 2016-17 but only played in five games and had no points in 2017-18. The Lightning signed Bournival to a one-year, two-way contract April 19.
