Ferraro played four seasons for Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. His best offensive season came in 2008-09, when he had 55 points (37 goals, 18 assists) in 53 games. He was traded to Everett on July 26, 2010, and named captain on Sept. 23, 2010.

The Red Wings signed Ferraro to a three-year contract on Nov. 2, 2010. He had 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 41 games for Everett, missing six weeks because of a sports hernia injury, then made his pro debut with Grand Rapids in the American Hockey League on April 9, 2011.
Ferraro spent the next three seasons with Grand Rapids before making his NHL debut for Detroit on March 18, 2014. He signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Red Wings on July 25, 2014. After scoring 27 goals in 70 games for Grand Rapids, Ferraro was called up again and scored his first NHL goal on April 11, 2015, against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Ferraro signed another one-year, two-way contract with the Red Wings on July 5, 2015. He appeared in seven games during the 2015-16 season before injuring his knee, then was claimed off waivers by the Bruins on Nov. 22, 2015. He had 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 58 games for Boston.
The St. Louis Blues signed Ferraro to a one-year contract on July 8. 2016, but he was placed on waivers three months later and was assigned to Chicago of the AHL. He had 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 22 games before sustaining a knee injury that required season-ending surgery.
He signed with the Wild and had one goal in two games early in the season before being sent to Iowa of the AHL.
