Rychel was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round (No. 19) in the 2013 NHL Draft after he had 87 points (40 goals, 47 assists) for Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League.
The following season, Rychel split time between Windsor and Guelph of the OHL and had 90 points (34 goals, 56 assists).

In 2014-15, he began his season with Springfield of the American Hockey League, where he had 33 points (12 goals, 21 assists) in 51 games. He was called up to the Blue Jackets and made his NHL debut in a 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators on Nov. 29, 2014. He had three assists in five games before he was sent back to Springfield.
Rychel split time in 2015-16 with Lake Erie of the AHL and the Blue Jackets. In Columbus, he had nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 32 games and 27 points (six goals, 21 assists) with Lake Erie, where he helped the team win the Calder Cup and was selected to the AHL All-Star Classic.
On June 25, 2016, Rychel was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade with the Blue Jackets. He played in 73 games with Toronto of the AHL the following season and had 52 points (19 goals, 33 assists).
Rychel was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens in a trade with the Maple Leafs on Feb. 25, 2018. In 2017-18, he had 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists) in 71 games for Laval of the AHL and two points (one goal, one assist) in four games for the Canadiens.
Rychel's father, Warren, played for five teams in eight seasons in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup in 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche.
