The Senators claimed Hawryluk off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Feb. 17, 2020. Florida was trying to get the two-way forward through waivers to assign him to Springfield of the American Hockey League before the Senators pounced.
Hawryluk was selected by the Panthers in the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft. He played four seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, making the WHL East Second All-Star Team in 2016, his final junior season after scoring 106 points (47 goals, 59 assists). He signed with the Panthers on March 1, 2017 and was assigned to Springfield of the American Hockey League.

He made his NHL debut Dec. 15, 2018 for the Panthers against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hawryluk scored his first two NHL goals on Dec. 23, 2018 in a 6-3 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks.
